So when you thought crazy scientists thought of everything, they top themselves once more.

Once again, it’s the Korean scientists leading the news of a genetically modified dog that glows:

A cloned beagle named Ruppy – short for Ruby Puppy – is the world’s first transgenic dog. She and four other beagles all produce a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light.

A team led by Byeong-Chun Lee of Seoul National University in South Korea created the dogs by cloning fibroblast cells that express a red fluorescent gene produced by sea anemones.

Why you ask? Who knows. But it’s only fair since they made a kitty glow before Ruppy:

Apparently, Koreans have a hard time seeing at night. Instead of turning on lights, they figured it’s easier to attach a light bulb on the pet instead. And they went a step further and turned the pet into the light bulb for environmental concerns.
