I was watching the Animal Planet channel months back and they had an episode on different dog breeds – breaking down which breed might be right for you. Of course, they happened to mention Chihuahuas. The point that struck me? – CHILDREN AND CHIHUAHUAS DON’T MIX.
Being a chihuahua owner, I can definitely attest to that statement. My 5-year old niece is a ball of rapid energy that goes non-stop. If I had to give her a nickname, it would be doggie torturer. Her favorite dog? Brownie. I suppose it might be because he’s the smallest with the typical cute chihuahua features that girls are usually drawn to. Anyway, every time she insists that I leave Brownie at home with her, I come back to a terrified dog. When she calls him, he runs. Yep, that’s how terrifying the 5-year old is.
One time I came home and found Brownie trapped in a box in the garage while my niece and little cousin danced around him. Let’s just say he was extremely happy to see us. In fact, I don’t think I will ever leave him at home with her unless I absolutely have to be away.
On the other hand, Cocoa reacts differently to her loudness and limb pulling acts. He doesn’t try to run. If she puts her face or body anywhere close to him, he’ll start to growl with uneasiness. If she doesn’t move away from him after a few seconds, he snaps at her. The good news? Cocoa doesn’t really bite. He just nips at you gently. Good boy, Cocoa!
According to YourPureBredPuppy, Fragility is a concern and children can’t help being children.
Chihuahuas are NOT suited to children, no matter how well-meaning the child. Children cannot help being clumsy, and that a child meant well is little solace to a Chihuahua who has been accidentally stepped on, sat on, rolled on, squeezed, or dropped onto the patio. Most Chihuahuas feel overwhelmed by the loud voices and quick movements that children can’t help making — and stress and fearfulness (even defensive biting) may be the result.
With all that said, I will diagnose my dogs with THE AMANDAPHOBIA.
