cst1-1l-low1There are so many craft projects centered on pets! Love it! I’ve been looking at several sites to see what kind of creative ideas people have come up with.

One of my favorite ideas came from Better Homes and Garden. It’s a cozy quilted pet bed. Crazy? haha…absolutely. I haven’t even made the time to make a quilt for a human let alone give time to my dogs, but definitely when I have some time to spare I’d take on this project.

Scanning through another site, I found a list of cool stuff ranging from costumes, puppy beaded safety pins, soda pop can puppy, and of course food with pets! I think this would be another classification of dog craze/pampering.

Remind me to stamp my forhead with GUILTY.

Anyway, I think my next pet related project will be in the form of dessert. =) Don’t worry, I’m not going to eat my dogs.

What I really want is to make cupcakes that look like dogs. Anyone have some cool ideas to share with me?

obama_dog_merchandising Out of all the presidential pets in the history of US government, Obama’s dog, Bo (a.k.a Bobama) has to be the most marketable one. Why? It makes sense. Obama is popular and his wife, Michelle, is even more so with her friendship to Oprah and her super chiseled arms.

If you were a marketer, how could you capitalize on this media frenzy? Easy.

Merchandising the dog. That’s how. In fact, Beanie Babies maker Ty is already ahead of the curve and have started selling Bobama beanie babies (or shall we say, dogs):

First dog Bo has his very own children’s toy, courtesy of Beanie Babies maker Ty.

The company has been selling a $4.99 “Beanie Bo” toy made in the Portuguese Water Dog’s likeness, complete with white front feet and a red, white, and blue ribbon around its neck.

The toy’s first run, which went on sale April 16, sold out in a few hours, though toys are still available on eBay for around $20.

Wait a minute. It doesn’t end there. In fact, they have a book  out called “Bo, America’s command in leash”. Ridiculous you say? Tell that to Amazon.

glowing puppy

So when you thought crazy scientists thought of everything, they top themselves once more.

Once again, it’s the Korean scientists leading the news of a genetically modified dog that glows:

A cloned beagle named Ruppy – short for Ruby Puppy – is the world’s first transgenic dog. She and four other beagles all produce a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light.

A team led by Byeong-Chun Lee of Seoul National University in South Korea created the dogs by cloning fibroblast cells that express a red fluorescent gene produced by sea anemones.

Why you ask? Who knows. But it’s only fair since they made a kitty glow before Ruppy:

glowing cats

Apparently, Koreans have a hard time seeing at night. Instead of turning on lights, they figured it’s easier to attach a light bulb on the pet instead. And they went a step further and turned the pet into the light bulb for environmental concerns.

shedding-pets1My three little rascals have been shedding like crazy! Ahh…how do people usually handle all this hair that keeps flying around sticking to clothes, bedding, furniture, carpet, and cars? =/ Sigh…is there a vacuum for dog hair? I don’t mean a machine that vacuums hair that’s already shed. I mean a vacuum that I can hold up and literally vacuum from their body - hmm…maybe that’s another invention I should pursue besides my disciplinary spanking device. Then again, I bet my dogs would run away at the site of such a thing, especially since they already run away from our regular vacuum.

So with that thought I’m going to digress. Why on earth are dogs afraid of vacuum cleaners so much? My dog, Lucky, literally ran into the closet, climbed on top of my stacked boxes and bags and hid in inconspicous darkness. It was the funniest sight! Too bad I didn’t catch that on video.

Suite101.com mentions the reason they run and it isn’t because it looks like a monster. In fact, they’re just sensitive to the sound.

Dog hearing is significantly better than human hearing, and they can hear in the ultrasonic range - very high frequency sounds inaudible to humans (remember those dog whistles that never seemed to work? Same principle).

Vacuum cleaners tend to put out loud ultrasonic sounds that are irritating and frightening to dogs. They attack the vacuum because they just want it to shut up. So if you have a dog, it might be kind to put him or her outside or in another room with the door closed while you vacuum. At the very least, you’ll spare your vacuum cleaner some teethmarks.

Maybe next time I’ll leave them in the bathroom while I vacuum, but maybe I won’t. I like watching them run. lol.

But seriously, how do people get rid of all this hair? A few months back a lady I was sitting next to at Reed Dog Park was talking about the FURminator. That’s right - a mean DeShedding tool that’s supposed to decrease the shedding by 60%-80%. Is this claim true? If you’ve tried it, let me know if it’s worth it!

I guess I could also try some tips from eHow.com, but I’m really dreading the work. Why can’t my dogs brush themselves? In fact, why can’t I have self-maintaining dogs? - pick of their poop, take their own baths, feed themselves, work! haha…sigh…complain? yes, but I still love them :)

I’m just glad I don’t have super shedding dogs like Huskies. I would get a non-shedding dog, but I don’t happen to like those breeds as much (most requiring grooming. aka haircuts).

Alright, time to use the lint roller on my pants. Have a woofsome day!

dog wearing mask There’s a lot of talk morbid news about the swine flu in the news these days. I am certain a lot of people are wondering if dogs and cats can actually contract the disease, and god forbid,  transmit the disease to humans.

Turns out, there is no evidence to support that they can contract it:

Q: Can animals, such as dogs or cats, contract the swine flu? If so, can they transfer it to humans?

CNN: There is no evidence that dogs and cats can contract swine flu. Still, this is a new strain of swine flu virus, and investigators can’t rule it out until more tests are done. In the past, the avian H5N1 flu has infected domestic cats and at least one dog in Thailand, according to the scientific literature. In 2004, the equine H3 virus appeared to infect dogs. There have been no reports of dogs or cats spreading the flu to people.

Well, at least our canine and feline friends are safe!

I can’t believe this (sometimes) cute animal can cause us so much trouble!
