A woman diagnosed with 4 seizure conditions is helped by farm animals who reduce her attacks better than drugs or therapy. She can’t work due to her illness and her husband lost his job 4 weeks ago. So he has cut down his meals to just 1 a day to afford $100/week for their pets’ feed. (CNN video)
Even though I’m a pet lover, I seriously question this man’s decision. Yes, I love my dogs. I would go out of my way to give them happiness and treats. But if it came to a decision between my (human) family’s health versus my pet, I would have to say that I, as a human being, cannot possibly choose the animals over my blood.
I know there are lots of pet owners out there who are in this bad situation of having to choose between eating and feeding their pets. I pray for all of them and their pets that things will improve.
The economy is not in the greatest condition. In fact, google search for “economy is bad” brings up 97 MILLIONS records. But guess what? Google search for “sign of economic recovery” brings up 13.3 million records (as of today). But keep your heads up. Remember that the day comes after the night, the sun comes out after the storm, and with wildfire, new life springs up in the wildernesss.
Third Harvest
There’s a non-profit organization called Second Harvest. It’s mission? Collect excess food from people, companies, and other organizations that might have excess food. For example, an average American moves 11.7 times in his/her life time, which equates to 1/6 moving every year. As most of you can relate, there are LOTS of food that people either throw away or give away during the move. Whatever is donated, Second Harvest will collect and redistribute to those in need.
A lady I met at a dog park mentioned that there are apparently lots of pets being turned over to animal shelter because the owners can no longer afford to feed them. They hope that the animal shelters will take care of their pets instead of having to starve them. She mentioned why not start a Second Harvest for pets in this hard economic times so that we can help feed pets whose owners are in financial hardship? And call it Third Harvest…? What do you guys think?
